Communication has become one of the most regulated areas of organisational life. Statements travel instantly through social platforms and broadcast channels, and every claim can be tested against legal duties of accuracy, confidentiality, fairness and privacy. In a crisis, the pressure to speak quickly collides with the need to verify facts, protect individuals and meet reporting duties to regulators, investors and affected communities.
This course equips communication professionals to work within the policy and regulatory frameworks that apply to strategic and crisis messaging. Participants study the legal foundations of media and online communication, including defamation, privacy and data protection, intellectual property and advertising standards, and the disclosure obligations that apply in different sectors. They examine government communication policy, access to information rules and the boundaries between public interest, commercial confidentiality and national security.
The final sessions turn to implementation: building crisis communication policies, approval and escalation chains, spokesperson rules, social media governance and records systems. Participants practise with realistic scenarios and leave with draft protocols, a regulatory checklist and tested holding statements for use in their own organisations.
