Agricultural finance sits at the centre of food security and rural income, but it remains underserved because the risks are real and the lending methods are often borrowed from urban business banking. Rain-fed production, volatile prices, thin collateral and weak market links produce high default rates when loans are not built around how farms and value chains actually operate.
The Practical Agri-Finance & Value-Chain Lending Training Course gives lenders and project staff a complete method. Participants begin with the structure of agricultural value chains and the financing needs at each link, then learn to profile clients, build crop and livestock budgets and test repayment capacity. Product design follows, covering seasonal loans, equipment finance, trader and processor facilities, warehouse receipts and chain-based lending. The programme then turns to risk management, including insurance, guarantees and early warning, before closing with portfolio monitoring, collections and the policies a lender needs to scale responsibly.
Every session works from budgets, farm records and loan files rather than abstract principles. Participants complete an appraisal of a realistic borrower and leave with a draft product concept for their own institution.
