Commercial agriculture in Africa is expanding, driven by urbanisation, regional trade and new processing investment, but many smallholders remain on the margins of these opportunities. Whether a commodity chain delivers fair returns and reliable supply depends on how its actors coordinate, share risk and meet quality requirements. Programmes and companies that ignore these relationships often fund equipment, training or demonstration plots that fail to change how the market actually works.
The Professional Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course equips participants to analyse and strengthen agricultural markets from both a business and a development perspective. It begins with value chain concepts and mapping, moves to the economics of production, aggregation and processing, and then examines the business models that link farmers to buyers. The second half introduces market systems development, showing how supporting functions such as finance, information, inputs and regulation shape the core market, and how interventions can be designed to trigger lasting, systemic change rather than short-lived project activity.
Participants work in teams on a chosen commodity, such as dairy, horticulture, coffee, maize or poultry, building a chain map, margin analysis and intervention strategy that they refine each day and present at the close.
By the close of the week, you will be able to:
