Agricultural businesses operate with more uncertainty than almost any other sector. Yields depend on weather, prices move with global markets and exchange rates, pests and diseases cross borders, and many suppliers are smallholders with little financial cushion. As climate variability increases and buyers demand traceability and quality guarantees, firms, cooperatives and the programmes that support them need a disciplined way to understand where risk sits in a value chain and who is best placed to carry it.
The Risk Management for Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course builds that discipline step by step. It begins with risk concepts and frameworks applied to farming and agro-processing, then analyses production, market, financial, logistical, regulatory and reputational risks at each stage of the chain. Participants compare risk management instruments, from agronomic practices and diversification to insurance, hedging, contract structures and storage-based finance, and learn when each is appropriate for smallholders, aggregators, processors and exporters. A market systems perspective shows how supporting functions and rules shape risk across the whole system.
The approach is applied throughout. Participants analyse case material from maize, dairy, coffee, horticulture and other commodities, practise quantitative and qualitative risk assessment and develop a risk management plan for a value chain they work in.
