Animal production is one of the fastest routes to income for smallholders and commercial farmers alike, but it is also among the most exposed. Disease moves quickly through crowded stock, oxygen failures can empty a pond overnight, and drought or flooding can push feed and water costs beyond what an enterprise can bear. Yet many operations still manage by instinct rather than by a written, tested view of what could go wrong.
The Risk Management for Aquaculture, Poultry and Livestock Production Training Course introduces a practical risk process built on ISO 31000 principles and adapted to farm realities. Participants establish context and objectives, identify hazards across the production cycle, analyse and prioritise them, select treatments and set up monitoring. Technical content covers biosecurity zoning, health and vaccination planning, welfare standards, post-harvest handling and traceability. Commercial content addresses price volatility, buyer concentration, credit exposure and insurance options.
Learning is built around farm case files and site-style exercises. Each participant builds a risk register and contingency plans for an enterprise of their choice, and presents them for critique by the group and facilitator before the programme closes.
