Buildings account for a large share of energy use and emissions, and owners across Africa and beyond are now under pressure from tenants, investors and regulators to cut both. The difficulty is that the promised savings are uncertain. Between the audit and the utility bill lie design errors, installation faults, commissioning gaps, changing occupancy and fluctuating energy prices.
The Risk Management for Building Energy Performance and Decarbonisation Training Course applies established risk management methods to this setting. Participants learn to identify hazards to performance across the project life cycle, rate them for likelihood and impact, and decide which to avoid, reduce, transfer or accept. The course examines technical risks such as equipment sizing and controls, delivery risks such as procurement and contractor capability, and commercial risks such as tariffs, financing and savings guarantees.
Learning is case-driven. Participants analyse sample energy audits, test the sensitivity of retrofit business cases and finish by compiling a risk-based decarbonisation roadmap for a building or portfolio of their choice, supported by feedback from the trainer and from peers working in different property sectors.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
