Every organisation runs on written communication, but few treat it as a source of risk. Contracts are negotiated by email, board decisions live in minutes, and project instructions are given in short messages that are later disputed. When wording is vague or a record is incomplete, the cost shows up as disputes, failed audits, regulatory queries and damaged relationships.
This course approaches writing and minute taking through the lens of risk. Participants first identify the categories of exposure in written work: legal liability, confidentiality and data protection, misrepresentation, ambiguity, tone and cultural misunderstanding. They then learn techniques to prevent each one, including structured drafting, fact checking, careful use of qualifiers, and review before sending.
The second part deals with meetings. Participants practise preparing for a meeting, capturing discussion without verbatim transcription, distinguishing decisions from debate, recording action owners and deadlines, and presenting a draft promptly for approval. The programme closes with document control, covering version history, retention schedules and secure storage. Practice is continuous: participants draft, review and revise real samples and leave with checklists to use in their own roles.
By the close of the course, participants will be able to:
