Across East Africa and the wider continent, governments and development partners have committed to raising agricultural productivity, cutting post-harvest losses and creating rural jobs, often under the African Union's CAADP agenda. Delivering on those commitments is difficult. Smallholders face fragmented land, limited credit and unreliable markets, while public programmes are frequently under-funded, poorly coordinated or designed without the communities they are meant to serve.
The Rural Development & Agricultural Transformation Training Course gives practitioners a structured way to think about and plan change in rural economies. It opens with the concepts of structural transformation and rural livelihoods, then works through the levers that matter most: land and natural resources, extension and research, input and output markets, finance and insurance, farmer organisations and rural infrastructure. Later sessions address inclusion, climate risk and the use of digital services, before bringing everything together in programme design, budgeting and results measurement.
Teaching mixes short expert input with case analysis drawn from African rural programmes, group planning exercises and participatory tools that participants can use in the field. Each participant leaves with a draft investment concept for a district, county or value chain of their choice.
