Animal-source foods are among the fastest-growing segments of African agriculture, driven by population growth, urbanisation and changing diets. Fish farming, commercial and semi-commercial poultry, and improved dairy and meat production offer strong returns where enterprises are well planned, but many ventures fail because of high feed costs, disease outbreaks, poor genetics, unreliable markets or weak financial records. Climate variability and concern over antimicrobial resistance add further pressure on producers to manage animals efficiently and responsibly.
The Strategic Aquaculture, Poultry & Livestock Production Training Course combines enterprise strategy with practical husbandry. It opens with how to choose and plan an animal enterprise, assess sites, resources and markets, and set production targets. Separate days then examine aquaculture, poultry, and ruminant and pig production in turn, covering production systems, breeds, housing, nutrition, health and biosecurity. The final day draws these strands together with feed planning, enterprise budgets, gross margin analysis, value addition and marketing, ending with a business plan for an integrated or single-species farm.
Sessions use farm case studies, production calculators, and health and vaccination planning exercises. Participants are encouraged to bring their own farm or project data so that the calculations and plans they produce reflect the enterprises they actually manage or support.
