Best Practices in Data Protection & Privacy (DPO) Training Course in Rwanda

Classroom cohorts in Kigali · live online · in-house anywhere in Rwanda

Most privacy failures are not caused by missing policies but by weak routines: an outdated record of processing, a vendor contract nobody reviewed, an access request that sat unanswered, or a breach that was escalated too late. Regulators across Africa and beyond increasingly look for evidence that protection works in practice. Five days give data protection officers and privacy teams tested methods for running a privacy programme that holds up under scrutiny.

Sessions cover data mapping and records of processing, lawful basis and consent management, privacy by design, data protection impact assessments, and workflows for data subject rights requests. You also work on processor due diligence and data processing agreements, cross-border transfer safeguards, retention schedules, and breach detection and notification. GDPR serves as the international benchmark, alongside ISO/IEC 27701 and the principles common to African national data protection laws. It is aimed at DPOs, compliance and legal officers, information security and records managers, and IT, HR and marketing staff who process personal data in banks, telecoms, hospitals, government and NGOs. Afterwards you can audit a privacy programme and fix the gaps that matter most. Classroom, online and in-house formats carry a CPD-accredited certificate.

About this course

Data protection laws now apply across much of Africa and the wider world, and regulators have moved from awareness campaigns to investigations, enforcement notices and fines. For data protection officers, the challenge has shifted from writing a policy to proving that personal data is handled lawfully every day, in every department and by every supplier that touches it.

The Best Practices in Data Protection & Privacy (DPO) Training Course focuses on the routines that distinguish a mature privacy programme from a paper one. Participants review accountability frameworks and the role and independence of the DPO, then work through the operational core: data inventories, records of processing activities, lawful basis assessments, privacy notices and consent records. Later sessions address impact assessments and privacy by design in new projects, efficient handling of access, correction and erasure requests, third-party and international transfer risk, retention and secure disposal, and breach response from detection to notification and lessons learned. The week ends with audits, maturity assessment and the metrics that keep senior management informed.

Each topic is taught through templates, worked examples and peer comparison. Participants benchmark their organisation's current practices, complete a DPIA on a sample system, run a breach tabletop exercise and build a twelve-month improvement plan.
