GIS and Remote Sensing Integration Training in Rwanda
Classroom cohorts in Kigali · live online · in-house anywhere in Rwanda
Satellite imagery only becomes useful to planners when it lines up precisely with the vector layers, field records and boundaries already held in a GIS. Over ten days you work through the full image-to-map chain, starting with choosing between Landsat, Sentinel, commercial high-resolution and drone sources for a given analysis question. Radiometric calibration, atmospheric correction and geometric correction follow, with ground control points and accuracy checks that push georeferencing towards sub-meter precision. You then build spectral indices such as NDVI with band math, enhance imagery for interpretation, and compare unsupervised clustering, object-based segmentation and supervised classifiers including random forest.
Later sessions bring multispectral and hyperspectral outputs into GIS workflows, combining classified rasters with vector data for change detection, accuracy assessment and map production. Practical exercises use real scenes covering farmland, settlements and forest, so every technique is tested on imagery that behaves like project data. GIS analysts, remote sensing technicians, environmental scientists, agricultural and forestry officers and urban planners make up the natural audience. By the end you can design an integrated workflow, defend your choice of sensor and classifier, and deliver land cover maps with documented accuracy statistics.
About this course
Remote sensing and GIS are most powerful when fully integrated — yet many professionals use them as separate tools. This course teaches the complete workflow: from satellite imagery acquisition and preprocessing through georeferencing, classification, and analysis within GIS frameworks that drive decision-making.
Hands-on projects use Landsat, Sentinel, and commercial imagery alongside QGIS and ArcGIS to solve real land-use monitoring, environmental change detection, and resource management challenges.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from public sector institutions, private enterprises, development organizations, and regulated professional environments, examining how GIS and remote sensing integration is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for multitemporal change detection, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
