Poultry can turn a small plot into a steady income, yet many new flocks fail because of poor housing, expensive feed and disease outbreaks that wipe out birds within days. Five days begin with selecting the right type of bird for your market and capital, comparing layers, broilers, improved indigenous chicken and other species. Housing sessions cover space, ventilation, lighting, litter, brooding and biosecurity for different flock sizes. Feed and nutrition work shows how to cut costs through correct rations for each growth stage, home mixing, alternative ingredients and reducing wastage.
Health management covers vaccination schedules, Newcastle disease, Gumboro, coccidiosis, parasites and the hygiene routines that prevent many outbreaks. The final day addresses breeding management, egg selection, incubation and record keeping to improve productivity over successive batches. Worked costings show how feed, chicks, vaccines and labour translate into margins per bird. Smallholder and commercial poultry farmers, extension officers, youth and women's groups, agribusiness entrepreneurs and NGO livelihood staff all fit the course. Afterwards you can plan a flock, build a budget, follow a health calendar and spot problems before they become losses.

Participants learn practical skills they can implement immediately, with potential to increase household income significantly through improved poultry production.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from public sector institutions, private enterprises, development organizations, and regulated professional environments, examining how poultry keeping and management is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for selecting appropriate poultry types, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
