Smallholder farmers hold most of Africa's agricultural land, but many still lack timely advice, reliable inputs, fair prices and affordable finance. Digital tools can close those gaps only when they suit low-income, low-connectivity users and sustain a viable business model. Over five days, participants study how successful agritech services are designed, financed and run. Topics include farmer registries and digital identity, SMS, USSD, IVR and app-based advisory, e-extension, agent networks, mobile money and embedded finance, input and produce marketplaces, traceability, weather and satellite data, and farm management records.
Advanced sessions look at data ethics, consent and ownership, interoperability, partnerships with telecom operators and cooperatives, unit economics and impact measurement through usage analytics. Participants test ideas with user journey mapping and a pilot design exercise. Agritech founders, product managers, extension and programme staff, cooperative leaders, agribusiness executives, development partners and government digital agriculture teams will find the content applicable. The programme runs in classrooms in 18 cities, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate for completion. You leave able to specify a service, plan a pilot and track whether farmers actually benefit.
Digital agriculture has moved from pilot projects to mainstream services in many African markets, yet adoption among smallholders remains uneven. Many platforms fail because they assume smartphones, steady data coverage and high literacy, or because no one pays for the service once donor funding ends. Teams that understand farmer realities, local partnerships and data practice are far better placed to build tools that last.
This advanced programme assumes participants already know the basics of digital tools in agriculture and focuses on design, delivery and scale. It opens with the smallholder context and a review of the digital agriculture ecosystem. Participants then examine core service lines in depth: advisory and extension, market linkages, financial services, supply chain traceability and farm decision support using weather, soil and satellite information. They study how to select channels for different user groups, how to onboard farmers through agents and cooperatives and how to build trust.
Later sessions address the commercial and governance dimension: pricing and revenue models, partnership agreements, data protection, cybersecurity and responsible use of farmer information. Practical elements include persona and journey mapping, a service blueprint, a pilot test plan and an indicator set for adoption and income effects. Case studies come from established services across the continent.
