Digital agriculture has moved from pilot projects to mainstream services in many African markets, yet adoption among smallholders remains uneven. Many platforms fail because they assume smartphones, steady data coverage and high literacy, or because no one pays for the service once donor funding ends. Teams that understand farmer realities, local partnerships and data practice are far better placed to build tools that last.
This advanced programme assumes participants already know the basics of digital tools in agriculture and focuses on design, delivery and scale. It opens with the smallholder context and a review of the digital agriculture ecosystem. Participants then examine core service lines in depth: advisory and extension, market linkages, financial services, supply chain traceability and farm decision support using weather, soil and satellite information. They study how to select channels for different user groups, how to onboard farmers through agents and cooperatives and how to build trust.
Later sessions address the commercial and governance dimension: pricing and revenue models, partnership agreements, data protection, cybersecurity and responsible use of farmer information. Practical elements include persona and journey mapping, a service blueprint, a pilot test plan and an indicator set for adoption and income effects. Case studies come from established services across the continent.
