Agriculture employs most households across East Africa yet remains one of the hardest sectors for lenders to serve. Rain fails, prices swing, produce spoils and repayment follows the harvest rather than the calendar. Lenders who understand how money moves between input suppliers, farmers, aggregators, processors and buyers can lend with far more confidence than those who treat every farmer as an isolated risk.
This five-day programme covers loan appraisal for crop and livestock enterprises, seasonal cash flow budgeting, group and cooperative lending, input and output financing, warehouse receipt finance, contract farming and outgrower schemes, crop and index insurance, and credit guarantees. You also look at mobile and digital channels for disbursement, repayment and data collection, plus portfolio monitoring and arrears control for agricultural books. Practical sessions use sample enterprise budgets from coffee, dairy, maize and horticulture chains. It suits loan officers and credit analysts in banks, SACCOs and microfinance institutions, agribusiness finance managers, cooperative leaders, development programme staff and donor-funded fund managers. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can structure a seasonal loan and defend the risk controls attached to it.
Financing for farmers and agribusinesses remains well below what the sector needs, and the reasons are well known: weather and price risk, thin collateral, scattered smallholders and costly field supervision. At the same time, buyers, processors and exporters are pulling more producers into organised chains, creating new sources of data, guaranteed offtake and repayment discipline that lenders can use.
The Applied Agri-Finance & Value-Chain Lending Training Course teaches participants to lend through the chain rather than around it. It begins with agricultural economics and mapping of actors, then builds appraisal skills for production and trading enterprises, covering budgets, margins, working capital and repayment capacity. Later sessions deal with structuring facilities that match harvest cycles, using contracts, receipts and insurance to reduce risk, and monitoring portfolios during the season.
Learning is practical. Participants work through enterprise budgets, draft loan terms, and test structures against drought and price shock scenarios. They close the week with a lending proposal for a chosen value chain and a risk mitigation plan. Time is also set aside for participants to compare lending practices across their own institutions and regions.
