Financing for farmers and agribusinesses remains well below what the sector needs, and the reasons are well known: weather and price risk, thin collateral, scattered smallholders and costly field supervision. At the same time, buyers, processors and exporters are pulling more producers into organised chains, creating new sources of data, guaranteed offtake and repayment discipline that lenders can use.
The Applied Agri-Finance & Value-Chain Lending Training Course teaches participants to lend through the chain rather than around it. It begins with agricultural economics and mapping of actors, then builds appraisal skills for production and trading enterprises, covering budgets, margins, working capital and repayment capacity. Later sessions deal with structuring facilities that match harvest cycles, using contracts, receipts and insurance to reduce risk, and monitoring portfolios during the season.
Learning is practical. Participants work through enterprise budgets, draft loan terms, and test structures against drought and price shock scenarios. They close the week with a lending proposal for a chosen value chain and a risk mitigation plan. Time is also set aside for participants to compare lending practices across their own institutions and regions.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
