Buildings, vehicles, plant, equipment and networks absorb much of an organisation's capital, yet many cannot say what they own, where it is or what it costs to keep running. Over five days, participants learn to bring physical and financial records together and manage assets from acquisition to disposal. Sessions cover building a complete fixed asset register, tagging and physical verification, capitalisation policies, depreciation methods, revaluation and impairment under IFRS and IPSAS, and handling of disposals and write-offs.
The second half moves from accounting to management. You work through the ISO 55000 family, the requirements of ISO 55001, asset management policy, strategic asset management plans, risk-based prioritisation, lifecycle costing, maintenance strategies and performance indicators. Finance managers, accountants, internal auditors, asset and facilities managers, engineers, procurement officers and public sector officials responsible for state property will benefit. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate for completed work. Afterwards you can reconcile an asset register to the ledger, justify replacement decisions with lifecycle cost evidence and draft an asset management plan that auditors and boards understand.
Poor asset records are among the most common audit findings in government bodies, NGOs and private companies alike. Assets are missing, double counted, held at the wrong value or kept long after they stopped being useful, while maintenance backlogs quietly grow. The consequences range from qualified audit opinions to unexpected equipment failures and service interruptions.
This programme joins the two sides of the subject that are normally taught apart. The first part concerns the fixed asset cycle: capitalisation, recording, coding, tagging, verification exercises, depreciation, impairment, transfers and disposal. The second part introduces the asset management system described in ISO 55001, including policy, objectives, risk and opportunity assessment, lifecycle planning, operational control, performance evaluation and continual improvement.
Participants work on sample registers containing deliberate errors, calculate depreciation under different methods and compare lifecycle costs of repair against replacement. The closing sessions bring the material together, with extra attention to audit evidence and board reporting, in an improvement roadmap that each participant tailors to their own institution and presents for peer comment.
On completion, participants will be able to:
