Poor asset records are among the most common audit findings in government bodies, NGOs and private companies alike. Assets are missing, double counted, held at the wrong value or kept long after they stopped being useful, while maintenance backlogs quietly grow. The consequences range from qualified audit opinions to unexpected equipment failures and service interruptions.
This programme joins the two sides of the subject that are normally taught apart. The first part concerns the fixed asset cycle: capitalisation, recording, coding, tagging, verification exercises, depreciation, impairment, transfers and disposal. The second part introduces the asset management system described in ISO 55001, including policy, objectives, risk and opportunity assessment, lifecycle planning, operational control, performance evaluation and continual improvement.
Participants work on sample registers containing deliberate errors, calculate depreciation under different methods and compare lifecycle costs of repair against replacement. The closing sessions bring the material together, with extra attention to audit evidence and board reporting, in an improvement roadmap that each participant tailors to their own institution and presents for peer comment.
