Droughts, floods and heat now interrupt harvests, supply chains and public services across the continent, while investors, donors and export buyers demand credible emissions data. Organisations that cannot measure their footprint or explain their climate risk are losing funding and market access. In five days, sustainability and project staff learn to turn climate commitments into measured, costed action.
You begin with climate science and policy essentials, including the Paris Agreement and nationally determined contributions, then calculate emissions step by step using the GHG Protocol: scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 boundaries, activity data, emission factors and quality checks. Adaptation sessions cover vulnerability and risk assessment, climate screening of projects, and options for water, agriculture, infrastructure and communities. You compare mitigation measures, marginal abatement thinking and an introduction to carbon markets and offset integrity. Environmental officers, sustainability managers, programme and project managers, development partners, county planners and corporate risk teams will gain the most. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house. Afterwards you can compile a basic inventory in a spreadsheet, rank climate risks and draft an action plan with indicators.
Climate change is no longer a distant environmental concern; it is a direct operational and financial risk. Energy costs, crop yields, water supply and the safety of infrastructure all shift as the climate changes, and funders increasingly require climate screening and emissions reporting as a condition of support. Many organisations want to act but lack a shared method for measuring, prioritising and reporting.
The Applied Climate Action, Adaptation & Carbon Accounting Training Course offers that method. It starts by explaining the drivers and impacts of climate change in the African context and the international and national policy frameworks that govern action. Participants then learn carbon accounting hands on, setting organisational boundaries, collecting activity data, applying emission factors and reporting results. The second half moves to climate risk and vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, and mitigation options including energy efficiency, renewable energy and nature-based solutions. Monitoring, reporting and verification close the cycle.
The course is built around exercises using simple spreadsheets and sample datasets from offices, farms, factories and projects. Each participant produces a mini inventory and a climate action outline that can be taken straight back to the workplace.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
