Live Online Best Practices in Adaptive Management & Locally Led MEAL Training Course
Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Nov 9, 2026 · from USD 800
Programmes rarely unfold as the logframe predicted. Conflict, drought, price shocks and shifting community priorities can make a well-designed plan obsolete within months, yet many monitoring systems only report against targets set years earlier. Donors now expect evidence of learning and course correction, and they increasingly expect local organisations to own the evidence rather than supply it to outsiders.
Over five days you work through the practices that make programmes adaptive: theory of change reviews, context monitoring, pause-and-reflect sessions, learning questions and decision logs. You examine locally led approaches such as participatory data collection, outcome harvesting, most significant change stories and feedback loops that give communities a real say. Sessions also cover accountability to affected populations, power in evaluation, and how to document changes without breaking donor compliance rules. MEAL officers, programme managers, country directors, partnership leads and evaluation consultants in NGOs, foundations and development agencies will benefit most. Classroom, online and in-house formats are offered, and each participant receives a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can design an adaptive MEAL plan, facilitate a reflection workshop and agree decision rules with partners and funders.

About this course
Funders and implementing agencies have learned that rigid results frameworks struggle in unstable settings. When assumptions fail, teams need to notice quickly, understand why and change course with the approval of those who fund and benefit from the work. At the same time, the push to shift power towards national and community organisations has changed who designs indicators, collects data and interprets findings.
This programme brings both ideas together. Participants begin with the principles of adaptive management and the tests of a good theory of change, then move into context monitoring, learning agendas and structured reflection moments that feed real decisions. The middle days turn to locally led MEAL: co-designing indicators with partners, strengthening community feedback mechanisms, using participatory methods and rebalancing the relationship between funder, intermediary and local organisation. The closing sessions focus on documentation, donor communication and the practical question of how to record changes so that audits and results reports stay coherent.
Learning is practical. Participants work on their own programme examples, test tools in small groups and finish with an adaptive MEAL plan they can take back to their teams and partners.
Training Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish adaptive management from ad hoc change and explain what makes adaptation defensible to donors.
- Review a theory of change and its assumptions against emerging evidence.
- Set up context monitoring that flags shifts in conflict, markets, climate and community needs.
- Design learning questions and a learning agenda linked to real management decisions.
- Facilitate pause-and-reflect sessions that end in recorded, accountable decisions.
- Apply participatory and outcome-focused methods led by local partners and communities.
- Build feedback and complaint mechanisms that communities trust and teams act on.
- Draft adaptation records and donor communications that keep reporting consistent.
