Large roads, dams, pipelines and mines reshape who earns, who is displaced and who carries the burden of change. When women and gender-diverse people are overlooked, projects meet resistance, delays and reputational damage, and communities lose benefits they were promised. Over five days participants learn to design equity into every stage of an extractive or infrastructure project rather than adding it at the end.
Sessions cover gender analysis, social baseline studies, gender impact assessment, resettlement and land compensation, local content and equitable recruitment, workplace safety and harassment prevention, and grievance mechanisms that women will actually use. You work with IFC Performance Standards, gender-disaggregated indicators and benefit-sharing models, and you practise drafting a gender action plan with budgets and responsibilities. The programme suits community relations officers, social safeguards specialists, ESG and sustainability managers, project engineers, government regulators, NGO staff and development partners working near mines, energy and transport corridors. Classroom sessions run in major African cities, online and in-house, and successful participants receive a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can brief leadership on gender risks and put a practical plan in front of a project team.
Infrastructure and extractive projects bring jobs, contracts and services, yet the gains rarely reach women and men equally. Land acquisition often bypasses women who farm but do not hold title, camp life exposes female workers to harassment, and consultation held in formal settings can silence the very people most affected. Lenders, host governments and communities now expect companies to show that gender has been analysed and acted upon, not simply mentioned in a policy.
This programme follows the project cycle from feasibility to closure. Participants begin with gender concepts and the specific dynamics of mining, oil and gas, energy, roads and water schemes. They then learn how to carry out gender analysis during impact assessment, plan consultation that reaches women, address resettlement and livelihood restoration, and build local employment and procurement opportunities that include women-owned enterprises. Later sessions deal with workplace culture, safety, grievance handling and the monitoring of results using sex-disaggregated data.
Teaching relies on case files from African and global projects, structured group work and templates participants can take back to their own sites. By the final session each participant has outlined a gender action plan suited to a project they know.
