Policy choices on subsidies, taxes, social protection and public investment are only as good as the evidence behind them, and ministries and think tanks increasingly expect economists to produce that evidence quickly from messy real-world data. Over five days you work through the full analytical workflow in Stata, R or Python: sourcing data from household surveys such as LSMS and DHS, national accounts and the World Development Indicators, then cleaning, merging and reshaping it for analysis. You measure poverty and inequality with headcount, poverty gap and Gini measures and build clear descriptive charts.
Econometric sessions cover OLS, panel data with fixed and random effects, instrumental variables and diagnostic testing, followed by impact evaluation methods including difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity and propensity score matching. The final day covers forecasting, cost-benefit analysis and writing policy briefs that present uncertainty honestly. Economists and analysts in finance and planning ministries, central banks, revenue authorities, statistics offices, think tanks, research institutes and development agencies will benefit. Afterwards you can frame a policy question, choose a credible method and defend your findings to non-technical decision-makers. Classroom, online and in-house delivery are available, and a CPD-accredited certificate is awarded.
Governments and development partners face growing pressure to show that policies are grounded in evidence, from the design of cash transfer programmes to the case for a new road or tax change. Analysts are expected to work with large survey and administrative data sets, apply credible methods for estimating cause and effect, and communicate their results to people who will never read a regression table.
The Data and Analytics for Applied Economics & Policy Analysis Training Course takes participants through that process over five days. It begins with economic data sources, data structures and reproducible cleaning workflows, then moves to descriptive analysis, poverty and distributional measurement. The middle of the week is devoted to regression analysis and the methods economists use to estimate the impact of programmes and policies when randomised trials are not available. The final day brings in forecasting, appraisal of public investments and the craft of turning technical findings into short, persuasive policy outputs.
Every session is computer-based. Participants work in Stata or R on real public data sets, follow guided scripts they can reuse, and complete a short applied policy analysis that combines estimation, interpretation and a written brief.
Participants completing the five days will be able to:
