Farmers, aggregators, processors and traders often operate on thin margins, seasonal cash flow and uncertain prices, so sound financial decisions decide who survives a poor harvest and who expands after a good one. This five-day programme equips participants to manage money across agricultural enterprises and the wider chains and markets in which they trade. You prepare enterprise budgets, calculate costs and gross margins at each link, track working capital through the season and read the financial statements of cooperatives and agribusinesses.
Further sessions cover price risk, input and output financing, warehouse receipts, blended and impact finance, loan appraisal, investment analysis and financial reporting to donors. Agribusiness managers, cooperative officers, value chain and market systems advisers, agricultural bankers, programme finance staff and development practitioners in Africa and beyond will gain tools they can apply the following week. Delivery is by classroom in many cities, online or in-house, and a CPD-accredited certificate is issued at the end. Participants return able to cost a value chain, test whether an enterprise is bankable and explain the numbers to farmers, boards and funders.
Agriculture is increasingly run as a business, yet many agricultural enterprises and the projects that support them still make decisions without reliable cost data. Cooperatives extend credit they cannot recover, processors underprice because overheads are hidden, and market systems programmes struggle to show that interventions leave actors financially better off. Strong financial management closes these gaps and makes enterprises attractive to lenders and investors.
The programme starts with agricultural accounting basics and enterprise budgeting, then follows the money through a value chain from input supply and production to aggregation, processing and marketing. Participants calculate margins by actor, model seasonal cash flow and working capital, examine pricing and hedging choices, and compare financing instruments such as input credit, warehouse receipt finance, leasing, guarantees and blended finance. The later sessions turn to investment appraisal, financial analysis of cooperatives and small and medium agribusinesses, and financial reporting and controls in donor-funded projects.
Methods are practical: spreadsheet models, farm and enterprise case files and short group assignments. Each participant completes a costed value chain model and a bankability checklist suited to their own work.
