Agriculture is increasingly run as a business, yet many agricultural enterprises and the projects that support them still make decisions without reliable cost data. Cooperatives extend credit they cannot recover, processors underprice because overheads are hidden, and market systems programmes struggle to show that interventions leave actors financially better off. Strong financial management closes these gaps and makes enterprises attractive to lenders and investors.
The programme starts with agricultural accounting basics and enterprise budgeting, then follows the money through a value chain from input supply and production to aggregation, processing and marketing. Participants calculate margins by actor, model seasonal cash flow and working capital, examine pricing and hedging choices, and compare financing instruments such as input credit, warehouse receipt finance, leasing, guarantees and blended finance. The later sessions turn to investment appraisal, financial analysis of cooperatives and small and medium agribusinesses, and financial reporting and controls in donor-funded projects.
Methods are practical: spreadsheet models, farm and enterprise case files and short group assignments. Each participant completes a costed value chain model and a bankability checklist suited to their own work.
