Funders expect timely, reliable results, and community members expect to be heard, yet many teams still collect data on paper, retype it into spreadsheets and report months late. Five days introduce the practical core of modern MEAL for people who are new to it or who have worked with only basic tools. You start with results frameworks, logframes and indicator design, then see how each connects to the data a project actually needs.
The next sessions cover mobile data collection with free tools, simple databases, and checks for accuracy, completeness and timeliness, including data quality assessments and verification visits. You learn feedback and complaints mechanisms so that accountability to communities is built into daily work, and you create your first dashboards with Excel and Power BI to show progress clearly. Examples come from health, livelihoods, education and humanitarian projects. The course suits new M&E officers, project assistants, programme officers, data clerks, volunteers and partner staff in NGOs, government projects and development agencies. It is offered in the classroom, online or in-house with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can set up a basic digital MEAL system, spot weak data and present results that managers and donors can use.
Projects are judged on the evidence they produce. Monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning, usually shortened to MEAL, gives teams that evidence and a way to act on it. Digital tools now make it faster and cheaper to gather information, but they do not fix unclear indicators or careless data entry. Staff entering the field often learn systems by trial and error, which leads to inconsistent definitions, missing records and reports nobody trusts.
This introductory programme lays solid foundations. Participants first learn the language of results: inputs, outputs, outcomes, indicators, baselines and targets, and how a logical framework ties them together. They then look at how data moves through a project, from collection on phones and tablets to storage, cleaning, analysis and reporting. A full day concentrates on data quality, covering the dimensions of quality, routine checks, spot checks and ways to correct errors at source.
The remaining sessions address accountability to affected populations, learning events and communication of findings through charts and dashboards. All content is taught with simple, widely available tools and short practical tasks that need no coding. Each participant ends with a starter MEAL plan and a first dashboard built from sample project data.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
