On construction and infrastructure projects, money is lost less often through poor engineering than through missed notices, undocumented instructions and weak contract administration. Over five days, participants learn how to run a contract by the book so that entitlement is protected and decisions can withstand audit. Sessions work through the structure of the FIDIC Red, Yellow and Silver Books, the roles of employer, engineer and contractor, the order of precedence of documents, time bars, site records and the governance framework that surrounds procurement and delivery.
The programme goes on to variations, valuation, extension of time, delay and disruption, cost claims, interim payment certificates, taking-over, defects liability, termination, and dispute avoidance through the dispute avoidance and adjudication board, amicable settlement and arbitration. Compliance topics include conflict of interest, anti-corruption controls, document management and reporting. Contract managers, project managers, engineers, quantity surveyors, procurement and legal officers, employer representatives and public sector auditors will gain most. Formats are classroom, online and in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate for completed exercises. Afterwards you can prepare a compliant notice, assess a claim and brief management on exposure.
Public bodies, banks and development partners fund large works contracts across the region, and each expects those contracts to be administered transparently and in line with their terms. When administrators miss a deadline, fail to record an instruction or certify payment without support, the result is usually a claim, a delay and sometimes a dispute that consumes years. Strong governance is therefore as important as technical skill.
This advanced programme examines the way FIDIC conditions allocate risk, define responsibilities and set procedural requirements. Participants study the clauses that matter most in practice, and practise the habits that keep a contract healthy: early warning, contemporaneous records, structured correspondence and timely determinations. Governance topics link the contract to organisational delegations of authority, approvals, internal controls and the prevention of fraud and conflicts of interest.
The learning approach relies on a running case project. Participants review extracts from a sample contract, draft notices and responses, evaluate delay and cost claims, and role-play negotiation and board hearings. The week ends with a compliance review in which each participant assesses a contract file against a checklist developed during the sessions.
