Self-service analytics has put dashboards in the hands of hundreds of staff, and with that came conflicting numbers, copied spreadsheets, exposed personal data and reports nobody can trace to a source. Leaders making decisions from ungoverned dashboards take on hidden risk. Five days show how to keep the freedom of self-service while restoring trust and control.
You learn to design a BI governance framework with defined roles, data owners and stewards, and a catalogue of certified metrics and datasets. Hands-on sessions configure workspaces, row-level and object-level security, sensitivity labels, gateways and sharing in Power BI, and projects, permissions, data sources and extracts in Tableau. Further topics include data lineage and impact analysis, version control and deployment pipelines, change management, data quality checks, usage monitoring, retention, privacy law principles, audit evidence and incident handling. The programme suits BI managers and developers, data governance leads, analytics centre of excellence members, IT security and compliance officers, internal auditors and finance reporting managers. It is delivered in classroom sessions, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can publish a governance policy, secure a live report environment and demonstrate to auditors who can see what.
Business intelligence platforms have made it easy for anyone to connect to data and publish a chart, and that ease is the source of the governance problem. Without agreed definitions, different teams report different revenue figures. Without access control, sensitive staff, customer or beneficiary records reach people who should not see them. Without lineage, nobody can say which report breaks when a source system changes.
This advanced programme treats governance as an enabler rather than a brake. Participants design the operating model first: ownership of data and reports, the approval path from development to production, and the standards for naming, documentation and certification. They then implement controls in Power BI and Tableau, working through workspace and site structure, permission models, row-level security, data classification and sharing restrictions.
The remaining sessions address compliance and assurance, including privacy requirements, data quality rules, change control, monitoring of usage and refreshes, and the evidence that auditors expect. Participants work in a lab environment with sample data, build a governance checklist and leave with a policy outline, a security matrix and a monitoring plan for their own BI estate.
After completing the programme, participants will be able to:
