Pension schemes, insurers, SACCOs, endowments and treasury desks all face the same test: earning enough return to meet future obligations without taking risks their trustees do not understand. Weak investment policies, concentrated holdings and performance reports that hide true risk-adjusted returns are common causes of underfunding and difficult board meetings. Across five days you work through the full portfolio process, starting with writing an investment policy statement and setting return objectives, risk tolerance and constraints.
Sessions then cover strategic and tactical asset allocation using mean-variance optimisation, bond analysis with duration, convexity and yield curves, and equity valuation with discounted cash flow and relative multiples. You also assess alternatives such as private equity, real estate and infrastructure, measure risk with standard deviation, value at risk and tracking error, and evaluate performance using time-weighted returns, Sharpe ratios and Brinson attribution. It suits fund managers, investment analysts, pension fund officers, treasury staff and trustees, and runs in the classroom, online or in-house. You leave able to propose an asset allocation and defend it to an investment committee, and earn a CPD-accredited certificate.
Institutional investors in Africa are responsible for growing pools of long-term capital, from pension and provident funds to insurance reserves, SACCO surpluses and sovereign and development finance portfolios. With that growth comes sharper scrutiny from regulators, members and boards, who expect every allocation decision to be grounded in a clear policy, sound analysis and honest reporting of risk.
The Investment Management Training Course follows the portfolio management process in the order practitioners use it. Participants begin with investor objectives, constraints and the investment policy statement, then study modern portfolio theory, the capital asset pricing model and the construction of efficient portfolios. Later sessions apply fixed income and equity valuation techniques, examine the role and due diligence of alternative assets, and set out how to monitor, rebalance and attribute performance. Governance runs throughout: the work of investment committees, the selection and oversight of external managers, and the integration of ESG factors into investment decisions.
Teaching is quantitative but practical. Participants build return, risk and valuation calculations in Excel, interpret real market data and debate allocation choices in small investment committees, finishing the week with a portfolio proposal for a realistic institutional client.
