Farmers can grow more than ever and still earn little if aggregation, finance, processing and buyer relationships do not work. Agribusiness leaders are judged on how well they coordinate people and partners across the chain, not only on yield. This five-day programme gives managers the leadership and measurement tools to do that.
You begin with value chain mapping, margin analysis and the market systems approach, including the roles of supporting functions and rules. Leadership sessions cover vision setting, negotiation with off-takers, managing cooperatives and out-grower schemes, motivating field staff and handling conflict between chain actors. Performance sessions introduce balanced scorecards, KPIs, inclusive business models, gender and youth participation, and basic reporting to boards and funders. A closing workshop turns the ideas into a chain upgrading plan with owners, targets and timelines. The course is built for agribusiness managers, cooperative and farmer organisation leaders, value chain facilitators, agricultural programme officers, extension managers and agri-finance staff working in companies, NGOs, development projects and government. Delivery is classroom in 18 cities, online, or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate at the end. You leave able to lead a chain improvement initiative and show results.
Agriculture remains the largest source of livelihoods across much of Africa, yet many producers sell into weak markets where prices are volatile, quality is inconsistent and buyers and growers do not trust one another. Programmes that focus only on production often find the gains evaporate at the farm gate. Sustainable improvement depends on leaders who can connect the actors in a chain, align incentives and measure what changes.
The Leadership and Performance in Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course combines two strands. The first is analytical: value chain mapping, cost and margin analysis, identifying constraints and applying market systems thinking so that interventions fix root causes rather than symptoms. The second is managerial: leading diverse teams, building farmer and buyer partnerships, designing governance for cooperatives and contract farming, and setting up performance management that holds everyone to clear targets.
Participants work with realistic chains such as dairy, horticulture, coffee, grains and aquaculture, using field-style scenarios, role-plays and group planning. By the final session they will have produced a value chain analysis, a leadership and stakeholder engagement plan and a performance framework for their own organisation or project.
