Agriculture remains the largest source of livelihoods across much of Africa, yet many producers sell into weak markets where prices are volatile, quality is inconsistent and buyers and growers do not trust one another. Programmes that focus only on production often find the gains evaporate at the farm gate. Sustainable improvement depends on leaders who can connect the actors in a chain, align incentives and measure what changes.
The Leadership and Performance in Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course combines two strands. The first is analytical: value chain mapping, cost and margin analysis, identifying constraints and applying market systems thinking so that interventions fix root causes rather than symptoms. The second is managerial: leading diverse teams, building farmer and buyer partnerships, designing governance for cooperatives and contract farming, and setting up performance management that holds everyone to clear targets.
Participants work with realistic chains such as dairy, horticulture, coffee, grains and aquaculture, using field-style scenarios, role-plays and group planning. By the final session they will have produced a value chain analysis, a leadership and stakeholder engagement plan and a performance framework for their own organisation or project.
