Organisations often own assets they cannot find, cannot value and cannot justify keeping. Roads, plant, vehicles, buildings and equipment drain budgets when nobody tracks condition, utilisation or the true cost of ownership. Five days equip you to put that right with disciplined measurement and review.
You learn how fixed asset registers are built and verified, how physical verification exercises are planned, and how depreciation, impairment and disposal are monitored. The programme then moves to the structure of ISO 55001 and its companion standards, ISO 55000 and ISO 55002, followed by performance indicators, condition assessment, risk-based prioritisation and lifecycle costing. Sessions on evaluation show how to run internal audits, gap assessments, management reviews and corrective action tracking, and how to report findings to executives, regulators and funders. Participants work with sample registers, maintenance records and audit checklists rather than abstract theory. The course is designed for asset managers, finance and fixed asset accountants, internal auditors, monitoring and evaluation officers, facilities and maintenance managers, and public sector accounting staff. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate at the end. You return able to design an asset monitoring framework and assess your organisation's maturity.
Assets are usually the largest block of value on an institution's balance sheet, yet they are among the least scrutinised. Audit queries about missing or unrecorded items, unplanned breakdowns, deferred maintenance and capital projects that duplicate existing capacity point to the same underlying gap: weak monitoring and no systematic evaluation of how assets deliver value over their lives.
The programme connects financial control with engineering reality. It opens with the asset register, covering classification, tagging, capitalisation rules and reconciliation to the general ledger, and then introduces ISO 55001 requirements for policy, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. Participants build indicator sets for availability, condition, utilisation and cost, learn how to collect and verify data, and see how lifecycle cost and risk information supports renewal and disposal decisions.
The second half is about evaluation. Participants practise internal audit techniques, score a sample organisation against the standard, and draft corrective action plans and management review reports. Learning is by workshop: each concept is applied to realistic registers, maintenance logs and audit evidence, and participants finish with a monitoring framework tailored to their own organisation.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
