Assets are usually the largest block of value on an institution's balance sheet, yet they are among the least scrutinised. Audit queries about missing or unrecorded items, unplanned breakdowns, deferred maintenance and capital projects that duplicate existing capacity point to the same underlying gap: weak monitoring and no systematic evaluation of how assets deliver value over their lives.
The programme connects financial control with engineering reality. It opens with the asset register, covering classification, tagging, capitalisation rules and reconciliation to the general ledger, and then introduces ISO 55001 requirements for policy, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. Participants build indicator sets for availability, condition, utilisation and cost, learn how to collect and verify data, and see how lifecycle cost and risk information supports renewal and disposal decisions.
The second half is about evaluation. Participants practise internal audit techniques, score a sample organisation against the standard, and draft corrective action plans and management review reports. Learning is by workshop: each concept is applied to realistic registers, maintenance logs and audit evidence, and participants finish with a monitoring framework tailored to their own organisation.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
