Large works contracts rarely fail on the day they are signed. They fail slowly, through late notices, undocumented instructions, disputed variations and payment delays that nobody tracked. Employers lose money and contractors lose margin when contract administration is treated as paperwork instead of a performance system. Five days show contract teams how to monitor and evaluate delivery against the agreement in front of them.
You work through the FIDIC family of conditions, including the Red, Yellow and Silver Books, focusing on the roles of the Employer, Contractor and Engineer, notices and time bars, instructions, variations, extensions of time, claims, interim payment certificates, defects and completion. Monitoring sessions build contract registers, key performance indicators, programme review, cost reporting and risk logs, and show how to evaluate outcomes and capture lessons learned. Dispute avoidance, the dispute board and amicable settlement are covered. Contract managers, project engineers, quantity surveyors, procurement and legal officers, supervising consultants and public sector project teams will benefit. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house. Afterwards you can set up a contract monitoring dashboard and prepare well-supported claim and variation assessments.
Public bodies and private developers across Africa spend large sums on works contracts, often financed by development partners who expect disciplined administration. Yet cost overruns, stalled sites and payment disputes remain common, and many of them trace back to missed deadlines, unclear instructions and weak records rather than to technical problems alone.
The Monitoring and Evaluation of Contract Management & Administration (FIDIC) Training Course combines contract knowledge with a performance management approach. Participants first review the structure and risk allocation of the FIDIC conditions and the duties of each party. They then examine the administration cycle in detail: notices, programme and progress reporting, variations, valuation, claims for time and money, payment certification, and taking over and defects liability. The second half introduces monitoring and evaluation tools, including contract registers, performance indicators, earned value basics, compliance audits and post-contract reviews.
Learning relies on a running case of a road or building project with sample correspondence, programmes and certificates. By the end, participants will have built a monitoring framework and assessed realistic claims and variations, ready to apply on their own contracts.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
