Erratic rains, longer dry spells, new pests and degraded soils are already cutting yields for farmers across Africa, and the pressure on food systems is only growing. Five days give field practitioners proven methods to raise productivity while building resilience and limiting emissions. The programme starts with local climate risk analysis, then moves to practices you can put into the ground: conservation agriculture, mulching, intercropping, agroforestry, integrated soil fertility management and drought-tolerant and early-maturing varieties.
Water sessions cover rainwater harvesting, small-scale irrigation and moisture conservation. Further sessions look beyond the farm gate to storage, post-harvest loss reduction, market linkages, climate information services, index insurance and community seed systems. Participants learn to appraise practices with simple cost-benefit tools and to plan at village, landscape or county scale. Extension officers, agronomists, NGO programme officers, county agriculture staff, cooperative managers and donor project teams will gain applied skills. It runs in the classroom, online or in-house, includes field-style exercises, and ends with a CPD-accredited certificate.
Agriculture is both highly exposed to climate change and a significant source of greenhouse gases, which is why governments and development partners have placed climate-smart approaches at the centre of food security plans. The challenge for practitioners is turning the concept into concrete advice that smallholder families and agribusinesses can adopt and afford.
This course keeps to the practical. Participants first learn how to read local climate and risk information and to match practices to agro-ecological zones. They then work through the technologies that underpin resilient production: soil and water management, diversified cropping, improved seed, integrated pest management and agroforestry. The programme extends past production to food systems, covering storage, processing, nutrition, market access, finance and the policy environment that determines whether good practices spread.
Participants practise with farm scenarios, budgeting sheets and planning templates, working in mixed groups so that agronomy, finance and community perspectives are all heard. They finish with a prioritised package of climate-smart practices, the supporting evidence and an implementation plan for a community, project or enterprise they serve.
On completion, participants will be able to:
