Agriculture is both highly exposed to climate change and a significant source of greenhouse gases, which is why governments and development partners have placed climate-smart approaches at the centre of food security plans. The challenge for practitioners is turning the concept into concrete advice that smallholder families and agribusinesses can adopt and afford.
This course keeps to the practical. Participants first learn how to read local climate and risk information and to match practices to agro-ecological zones. They then work through the technologies that underpin resilient production: soil and water management, diversified cropping, improved seed, integrated pest management and agroforestry. The programme extends past production to food systems, covering storage, processing, nutrition, market access, finance and the policy environment that determines whether good practices spread.
Participants practise with farm scenarios, budgeting sheets and planning templates, working in mixed groups so that agronomy, finance and community perspectives are all heard. They finish with a prioritised package of climate-smart practices, the supporting evidence and an implementation plan for a community, project or enterprise they serve.
