Organisations that own roads, plants, fleets, buildings or networks spend heavily to acquire assets and often far less thought on how those assets will perform, age and be replaced. Poor registers, unplanned failures and unfunded renewals quietly drain budgets. Across five days, engineers, finance staff and executives learn how to manage physical and fixed assets as a coordinated system. The programme covers asset policy, strategic asset management plans, the asset register, condition assessment, criticality and risk ranking, lifecycle costing, depreciation, maintenance strategy, capital renewal planning and performance measurement under ISO 55001.
It is designed for asset managers, maintenance and facilities managers, finance and fixed asset accountants, infrastructure planners, public sector accountants, utility and parastatal managers and internal auditors. Participants work with sample registers and condition data to rank risks and compare renewal options. Classroom sessions, online cohorts and in-house formats are offered, with a CPD-accredited certificate on completion. You finish able to draft an asset management plan, justify investment priorities to a board and prepare for a management system gap review.
Assets are usually the largest line on an organisation's balance sheet, yet many institutions cannot say with confidence how many they own, where they are or what condition they are in. Ghost items on the fixed asset register, deferred maintenance and capital budgets set without evidence lead to service failures and audit queries. Boards, regulators and funders increasingly expect a structured, auditable approach to how assets are acquired, operated, maintained and retired.
Participants in this course are introduced to the ISO 55000 family of standards and the requirements of ISO 55001, including context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation and improvement. The sessions link engineering decisions to financial reporting, covering asset identification and tagging, capitalisation, depreciation, impairment and disposal alongside condition surveys, criticality, reliability thinking and total cost of ownership. They then show how to convert this evidence into a strategic asset management plan and a prioritised renewal programme.
The approach is workshop based. Delegates analyse sample registers, build a risk ranking and lifecycle cost comparison, and leave with a draft plan outline and an improvement roadmap for their own asset portfolio.
After completing the programme, participants will be able to:
