Live Online Strategic Chemical Handling, Laboratory & Process Safety Training Course

Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Nov 16, 2026 · from USD 800

Chemical incidents are usually the result of ordinary lapses: an unlabelled container, an incompatible store, a bypassed interlock or a change that nobody reviewed. Managers who set the systems carry as much responsibility as the people at the bench or the plant. This five-day programme equips safety leaders to control chemical risk across storage, handling, laboratories and process operations.

About this course

Industrial growth across Africa has expanded the use of acids, solvents, pesticides, fuels and process gases in factories, laboratories, farms and water works. With that growth comes a duty to manage the potential for fires, toxic releases, explosions and long-term health effects. Regulators, insurers and communities expect operators to show that hazards are understood and controls are working, and a single serious event can end an operation and a career.

Strategic Chemical Handling, Laboratory and Process Safety offers a leadership-level view of the field. Participants start with chemical hazards and the legal and management framework, move through safe handling, storage and transport, and then examine laboratory practice from risk assessment to waste. The second half of the week introduces process safety management: identifying scenarios, evaluating safeguards, controlling change and permits, maintaining equipment integrity, preparing emergency response and learning from incidents.

The learning style is applied. Delegates review labels, safety data sheets and layouts, analyse accident case histories and carry out a simplified hazard study of a process. They leave with a gap assessment and an improvement plan for their own site.

Training Objectives

At the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Classify chemical hazards and interpret GHS labels and safety data sheets.
  • Assess exposure and select appropriate engineering, administrative and PPE controls.
  • Design safe chemical storage with correct segregation and compatibility.
  • Plan spill response, emergency procedures and hazardous waste handling.
  • Carry out laboratory risk assessments and set safe working rules.
  • Explain the elements of process safety management and how they interlock.
  • Apply basic HAZOP and LOPA reasoning to a process scenario.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses and track corrective actions.

What you'll learn

Key Takeaways

Participants leave with:

  • A chemical inventory and risk register template for their site.
  • A storage segregation matrix and labelling checklist.
  • A laboratory safety audit form with scoring.
  • A simplified HAZOP worksheet completed on a sample process.
  • A management of change and permit to work review checklist.
  • A prioritised improvement plan with owners and deadlines.

Training Methodology

Sessions blend technical content with site-style practice to suit managers and supervisors. They include:

  • Label, safety data sheet and storage-layout reviews using real examples
  • Accident case histories analysed in small groups
  • A guided HAZOP exercise on a sample process flow
  • Laboratory audit practice using photographs and checklists
  • Individual gap assessment of participants' own workplaces
