Development funders and humanitarian agencies increasingly ask implementers to show how they learn and how affected communities shape decisions. Rigid logframes and annual evaluations were not built for this. Organisations that cannot demonstrate learning, adjustment and local ownership risk losing funding, and worse, continue spending on approaches that are not working for the people intended to benefit.
The Fundamentals of Adaptive Management and Locally Led MEAL Training Course starts from first principles. Participants review how monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning fit together, then build the habits of adaptive management: testing assumptions, setting learning questions, holding structured reflection and recording the decisions that follow. The second half shifts to locally led approaches, covering who defines success, how communities and local partners collect and interpret evidence, and how power is shared in the process.
The programme is deliberately practical. Participants work with a sample programme throughout, producing a learning agenda, a short set of participatory indicators and a reflection meeting plan they can adapt to their own work. No prior MEAL experience is required.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
