Agriculture still employs most people in many African economies, yet farm incomes remain low where markets are thin, buyers are few and quality standards are unmet. Donors, governments and private firms now expect projects to work through existing market actors rather than replace them, and to show lasting change after they leave. That shift demands planners who understand how chains and market systems actually function.
The Planning and Implementation of Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course follows the project cycle from diagnosis to delivery. Participants begin with chain mapping and selection of promising products, move into constraint and stakeholder analysis, and then design interventions that strengthen supporting functions such as inputs, finance, extension and processing. Later sessions deal with partnership agreements, pilot testing, adaptive management, gender and youth inclusion, climate resilience and the measurement of systemic change.
Sessions combine short inputs with working groups using realistic crop and livestock chain data, so every participant practises each tool on a live example. The course ends with a presentation of a draft intervention plan, which participants can adapt for their own projects or businesses.
