Financial systems across Africa are growing more complex, with new digital lenders, mobile money platforms, cross-border banking groups and rising demand for transparent anti-money laundering controls. Supervisory authorities are expected to keep pace with limited staff, so planning matters as much as technical knowledge. Banks, meanwhile, must show that compliance is built into daily operations rather than treated as an annual exercise.
The programme walks through the supervisory process in sequence. It begins with the legal and institutional basis of supervision and the principles that guide it, then moves to risk-based planning, institution risk assessment and the use of prudential data. Participants then prepare for and conduct examinations, review asset quality, capital, earnings, liquidity and governance, and draft findings. The final sessions address enforcement ladders, corrective action tracking, cooperation among regulators and compliance programme design inside banks.
Sessions are scenario driven. Participants work with sample bank returns, ratio sets and anonymised inspection extracts, producing a draft annual supervisory plan, a rating assessment and an examination report outline that can be adapted to their own jurisdiction and institution.
