Employers carry a duty to protect workers from foreseeable harm, and the list of foreseeable harms is lengthening. Rising temperatures, severe weather and air pollution affect outdoor and indoor workers alike, while remote work, restructuring and constant connectivity have placed mental health and wellbeing firmly within the scope of occupational safety.
The Professional Climate-Related and Psychosocial Workplace Risk Training Course brings these two fields together because they interact: a heatwave raises fatigue, irritability and error rates; a flood can leave staff anxious and displaced. Participants learn a common risk management process, from establishing context and identifying hazards to evaluation, control selection, monitoring and review. They then apply it first to climate-related physical risks and next to psychosocial risks, using suitable tools for each.
The programme is practical. Participants complete heat stress assessments, design emergency responses for extreme weather, interpret anonymised wellbeing survey results and rehearse supportive conversations. At the end they assemble an integrated plan, with responsibilities, budget and indicators, to take back to their organisation and present to management in the weeks after the course.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
