Hotter days, heavy rains, smoke and disrupted supply chains are changing the hazards workers face, while long hours, job insecurity and harassment quietly erode health and performance. Safety teams are asked to manage both, often with tools built for older risks. Over five days, participants learn to assess and control physical hazards linked to climate, including heat stress, flooding, storms, vector-borne disease and poor air quality, and to recognise psychosocial hazards such as workload, role conflict, violence, bullying and burnout.
You use hazard identification, risk matrices, hierarchy of controls, heat stress indices, work-rest scheduling, emergency and business continuity planning, and psychosocial surveys that point to causes rather than symptoms. Sessions also address ISO 45003 guidance, return-to-work support, manager conversations and employee assistance options. Group work uses scenarios from construction, agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and office settings. Safety and health officers, HR managers, occupational health nurses, facility managers, union representatives and line managers will benefit. Formats include classroom, online and in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can produce an integrated risk assessment and action plan.
Employers carry a duty to protect workers from foreseeable harm, and the list of foreseeable harms is lengthening. Rising temperatures, severe weather and air pollution affect outdoor and indoor workers alike, while remote work, restructuring and constant connectivity have placed mental health and wellbeing firmly within the scope of occupational safety.
The Professional Climate-Related and Psychosocial Workplace Risk Training Course brings these two fields together because they interact: a heatwave raises fatigue, irritability and error rates; a flood can leave staff anxious and displaced. Participants learn a common risk management process, from establishing context and identifying hazards to evaluation, control selection, monitoring and review. They then apply it first to climate-related physical risks and next to psychosocial risks, using suitable tools for each.
The programme is practical. Participants complete heat stress assessments, design emergency responses for extreme weather, interpret anonymised wellbeing survey results and rehearse supportive conversations. At the end they assemble an integrated plan, with responsibilities, budget and indicators, to take back to their organisation and present to management in the weeks after the course.
