Access to finance remains one of the biggest constraints on rural livelihoods across Africa. Farmers need seasonal working capital, traders need stock finance, and households need ways to save and insure against shocks. Institutions that serve them must balance outreach with financial sustainability, and many struggle with high arrears, weak appraisal and products that do not match irregular incomes.
This programme follows the full life of a rural financial product. It starts with the rural market itself: who the clients are, how their income cycles work and which institutional models, from microfinance institutions and SACCOs to commercial banks and village groups, serve them best. It then moves through product design, appraisal of agricultural and non-farm borrowers, pricing and cost control, savings mobilisation, portfolio monitoring and the governance and regulatory expectations that sit around lending to low-income clients.
Teaching relies on worked loan files, cash flow templates and portfolio spreadsheets, so participants practise the calculations they will meet in real institutions. By the final session each person has built a product concept, tested its pricing and drafted monitoring indicators for their own organisation.
