Smallholder farmers, traders and village artisans still struggle to reach credit and safe savings, while institutions serving them wrestle with seasonal cash flows, thin collateral and costly branch networks. Over five days, participants learn how successful lenders reach these clients and stay solvent. Sessions cover group and individual lending methodologies, agricultural and value chain finance, savings mobilisation, loan pricing and the cost of delivery in remote areas.
You also work through credit appraisal for farm and off-farm businesses, portfolio at risk, arrears management, provisioning and the ratios regulators and investors watch. A full day looks at mobile money, agent banking and other digital channels that lower the cost of reaching rural customers, alongside client protection and social performance. The programme suits microfinance managers, SACCO and cooperative officers, loan officers, bank rural-lending staff, NGO programme staff and development finance professionals. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house, and a CPD-accredited certificate follows. Afterwards you can appraise a rural borrower, price a product so it covers its costs and set up simple monitoring for a loan portfolio.
Access to finance remains one of the biggest constraints on rural livelihoods across Africa. Farmers need seasonal working capital, traders need stock finance, and households need ways to save and insure against shocks. Institutions that serve them must balance outreach with financial sustainability, and many struggle with high arrears, weak appraisal and products that do not match irregular incomes.
This programme follows the full life of a rural financial product. It starts with the rural market itself: who the clients are, how their income cycles work and which institutional models, from microfinance institutions and SACCOs to commercial banks and village groups, serve them best. It then moves through product design, appraisal of agricultural and non-farm borrowers, pricing and cost control, savings mobilisation, portfolio monitoring and the governance and regulatory expectations that sit around lending to low-income clients.
Teaching relies on worked loan files, cash flow templates and portfolio spreadsheets, so participants practise the calculations they will meet in real institutions. By the final session each person has built a product concept, tested its pricing and drafted monitoring indicators for their own organisation.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
