Food and Nutrition Security Training in Johannesburg, South Africa
Classroom training in Johannesburg · next cohort Nov 2, 2026 · from USD 3,400
Hunger and malnutrition rarely have a single cause, so responses that focus only on food supply often miss the health, care and income factors that keep children stunted and households vulnerable. The week starts with tools for measuring food security and nutritional status, including the food consumption score, household dietary diversity, coping strategies, anthropometry and MUAC screening, and the IPC classification system. You will analyse immediate, underlying and basic causes using established conceptual frameworks, linking availability, access, utilisation and stability. Sessions explain how gender, climate shocks, markets and disease interact to shape outcomes.
Design days focus on integrated interventions that combine agriculture and livelihoods, nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive actions, water and sanitation, health and school feeding. Social protection, cash transfers and vouchers are examined as tools for protecting diets during shocks. The final day covers monitoring indicators, surveillance systems and early warning. Programme officers, nutritionists, agricultural extension staff, county and ministry planners, and humanitarian practitioners will find it practical. Afterwards you can assess a community's situation, identify the drivers of malnutrition and design a coordinated response with measurable results.

About this course
Food insecurity and malnutrition are intertwined with poverty, agricultural failure, weak markets, poor health, and limited education, yet programs addressing only one dimension often fail. This five-day course teaches humanitarian professionals to design integrated food security and nutrition programs: assessing food security and nutritional status in communities, identifying root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition, and designing multi-sectoral interventions that address agricultural production, market access, health, education, and social protection simultaneously. Participants examine case studies from food security programs across the region.
Practical sessions include analyzing food security and nutritional data, identifying program priorities, and designing a multi-sectoral program intervention. Participants leave with tools and frameworks for addressing food security and malnutrition comprehensively.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from development initiatives, donor-funded programmes, nonprofit operations, and public sector environments, examining how food and nutrition security is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for understanding underlying causes, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
