Fundamentals of Chemical Handling, Laboratory & Process Safety Training Course in Cape Town, South Africa
Classroom training in Cape Town · next cohort Oct 26, 2026 · from USD 3,800
Most chemical accidents are not caused by exotic substances but by ordinary lapses: an unlabelled container, incompatible products stored together, a blocked eyewash or a transfer carried out without gloves. Five days give newcomers a solid footing in the hazards and the habits that prevent harm. You learn to classify chemicals under the Globally Harmonized System, read labels and safety data sheets, judge exposure routes, and apply the hierarchy of controls from substitution through ventilation to personal protective equipment. Further sessions cover storage segregation, bulk and drum handling, laboratory bench practice, fume cupboards, waste, spill response and emergency first aid.
The final days introduce process safety in simple terms, including loss of containment, fire and explosion, permits to work, management of change and incident learning. The programme is aimed at laboratory technicians, plant operators, store keepers, quality and production staff, HSE officers, supervisors and new graduates in manufacturing, water treatment, agriculture, mining, healthcare and education. It runs in classroom, online or in-house formats and ends with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can inspect a chemical store, complete a basic risk assessment and respond calmly to a spill.

About this course
Chemicals are used in almost every workplace, from cleaning agents in a hospital to solvents in a factory, reagents in a university laboratory and fertilisers on a farm. When they are poorly understood they cause burns, poisoning, fires and environmental damage, along with costly stoppages and legal exposure. Workers and supervisors who have never been formally trained often rely on habit, which is where hazards hide.
This foundation course builds understanding from the ground up. Participants first learn how chemicals harm the body and the environment, how hazards are communicated through classification, pictograms, labels and safety data sheets, and how exposure is assessed. They then work through safe storage, segregation, transfer and transport on site, followed by laboratory practice covering glassware, heating, fume cupboards, biological and chemical waste, and good housekeeping. The closing days introduce process safety principles, emergency preparedness and incident reporting, and show how small control failures combine into major events.
Content is delivered through demonstrations, label and data sheet exercises, workplace walk-through checklists and short scenario drills, so that the knowledge transfers directly to the participant's own site.
Training Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify common chemical hazards and the ways they can enter or harm the body.
- Interpret GHS classifications, pictograms, labels and safety data sheets.
- Carry out a basic chemical risk assessment and select suitable controls.
- Store, segregate, label and transfer chemicals safely.
- Apply safe working practices in a laboratory, including the use of fume cupboards.
- Respond correctly to spills, exposures, fires and other chemical emergencies.
- Explain core process safety concepts and report incidents and near misses.
What you'll learn
Key Takeaways
Delegates complete the programme with practical outputs:
- A chemical inventory and labelling checklist for their workplace.
- A completed risk assessment for one chemical task.
- A storage compatibility chart showing which products must be kept apart.
- A spill response card and first aid reference for the most common exposures.
- A laboratory safety inspection form for routine self-audits.
- A short list of improvement actions to raise with their line manager.
Training Methodology
