Leadership and Performance in Data Engineering, Databases & ERP Data Training Course in South Africa

Classroom cohorts in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town · live online · in-house anywhere in South Africa

Data teams are often technically strong yet struggle with the leadership questions that decide results: which platform investments matter, how to keep pipelines reliable, how to prioritise requests from finance, operations and analytics, and how to measure the performance of engineers and administrators. Ten days give team leads and managers the tools to answer them. The first half covers technical direction: modern data architecture, warehouses and lakehouses, ETL and ELT pipelines, orchestration, database administration, high availability, backup and recovery, performance tuning, security, and master data and integration for ERP systems such as SAP and Oracle. The second half is about leading performance: service levels, DataOps, observability, incident management, cost control, vendor management, roadmaps, hiring and coaching.

The programme is for heads of data and IT, data engineering managers, database administrators moving into management, ERP data owners, analytics leads and CIO office staff in banks, telecoms, government, manufacturing and utilities. Classroom, online and in-house delivery are available. Participants work with case platforms and metrics, and finish able to define an architecture roadmap, write service level objectives, build a delivery scorecard and lead a data platform review. A CPD-accredited certificate is awarded on completion.

About this course

As reporting, analytics and automation depend ever more heavily on core business systems, the people who run the data estate carry more responsibility than their job titles suggest. A failed overnight load, a corrupted ERP master record or an unnoticed schema change can stop invoicing, distort dashboards and shake confidence in the whole data function. Leaders must therefore combine sound technical judgement with the ability to organise teams, manage demand and show value.

This programme is written for people who already understand data technology and now lead others who build and run it. The technical thread reviews how operational databases, data warehouses, lakes and streaming services fit together, how ERP data is extracted, mapped, cleansed and governed, and which design decisions affect resilience, performance and cost. The leadership thread covers setting direction, translating business demand into a prioritised backlog, defining service levels and error budgets, running incident reviews, applying DataOps practices, managing suppliers and cloud spend, and developing a strong engineering culture.

The final days turn learning into practice through an integrated review of a case platform. Participants analyse its weaknesses, propose a roadmap and present performance measures to a simulated executive committee, using templates they can take back to their own teams.

Training Objectives

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate data platform architectures and recommend direction that fits business needs and budget.
  • Specify reliability targets, service levels and monitoring for pipelines and databases.
  • Oversee database operations covering backup, recovery, security and performance management.
  • Direct the extraction, integration and quality control of ERP data.
  • Prioritise demand from business units using transparent criteria and a managed backlog.
  • Apply DataOps, incident and change management practices within engineering teams.
  • Control cloud and licence costs and manage vendor performance.
  • Set team goals, measure performance and coach engineers and administrators.
