Live Online Advanced Chemical Handling, Laboratory & Process Safety Training Course
Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Nov 9, 2026 · from USD 800
Chemical incidents rarely start with a dramatic failure. They begin with an unlabelled container, an incompatible store, a bypassed interlock or a change nobody reviewed. This five-day advanced programme helps safety professionals and technical supervisors move beyond basic hazard awareness into systematic control of chemicals in laboratories, factories, water treatment works and processing sites.
You work through hazard classification under GHS, safety data sheets, exposure limits, ventilation and personal protective equipment, then the practicalities of storage segregation, transfer, waste handling and spill containment. Process safety content covers hazard identification, HAZOP and what-if studies, layers of protection analysis, fire and explosion hazards, relief and ignition source control, permit to work, and management of change. A closing day addresses emergency planning, incident investigation, audits and safety culture. Participants practise on realistic laboratory and plant scenarios using checklists and worked examples. It is aimed at HSE officers, laboratory managers, chemists, production and maintenance supervisors, environmental officers, fire safety staff and inspectors. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house with a CPD-accredited certificate. You leave able to audit a chemical store, lead a hazard study and strengthen site procedures.

About this course
Industrial growth in manufacturing, mining, agro-processing, oil and gas and public laboratories has expanded the range of hazardous substances in everyday use. Where controls are weak, the consequences include burns, poisoning, fires, environmental release and prosecution, along with expensive downtime and damage to community trust. Regulators, insurers and major customers now expect documented proof that hazardous substances are identified, controlled and periodically reviewed.
This course equips participants to manage chemical risk from the laboratory bench to the process unit. It starts with hazard communication, exposure assessment and the hierarchy of controls, then examines how chemicals are stored, moved and disposed of safely. The process safety segment introduces structured study techniques, the idea of independent protection layers, and the discipline needed to keep modifications, maintenance work and start-ups under control.
Training is practical and scenario based. Participants inspect sample storage layouts, interpret data sheets, build a risk register, and take part in a facilitated HAZOP node review. They also draft an emergency response outline and a short improvement plan, leaving with documents that can be adapted to their own sites and laboratories.
Training Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Classify and label chemicals using GHS and interpret safety data sheets accurately.
- Assess exposure risks and select appropriate engineering, administrative and PPE controls.
- Design storage, segregation and transfer arrangements that prevent incompatible mixing.
- Plan laboratory safety systems, including fume cupboards, waste streams and training.
- Facilitate HAZOP and what-if studies and record actionable recommendations.
- Apply layers of protection analysis to judge whether safeguards are adequate.
- Implement permit to work and management of change procedures.
- Prepare emergency response plans and investigate incidents to root cause.
What you'll learn
Key Takeaways
Participants leave the course with:
- A chemical inventory and risk register template.
- A storage segregation matrix for common laboratory and plant chemicals.
