Live Online Best Practices in Chemical Handling, Laboratory & Process Safety Training Course
Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Nov 9, 2026 · from USD 800
A mislabelled drum, an incompatible storage shelf or a bypassed interlock is often all it takes to turn routine work into a fire, toxic release or chronic health problem. Five days give laboratory, plant and safety staff the habits and tools to prevent that. You learn to classify hazards, read safety data sheets and GHS labels, and select controls using the hierarchy from elimination through ventilation and engineering measures to personal protective equipment. Storage and handling sessions cover segregation, bunding, transfer, spill response and waste disposal.
The programme extends from the bench to the plant. Participants practise laboratory risk assessment, fume cupboard and gas cylinder safety, and then meet process safety concepts such as hazard identification, HAZOP, layers of protection, management of change, permit to work, containment and emergency planning. Delivery is in the classroom, online or in-house, with site-specific scenarios on request. Laboratory managers, chemists, process operators, HSE officers, supervisors and environmental compliance staff will gain directly usable skills. Afterwards you can audit a chemical store, run a task risk assessment and draft emergency procedures, and you receive a CPD-accredited certificate.

About this course
Chemicals are present in far more workplaces than most people realise: water treatment plants, hospitals, universities, factories, fuel depots, farms and cleaning contractors all hold substances that can burn, poison, corrode or react violently. Most incidents are traced back to ordinary failures such as poor labelling, unclear procedures, inadequate training and equipment left in poor repair, rather than to exotic hazards.
The Best Practices in Chemical Handling, Laboratory & Process Safety Training Course builds safe practice from the container upward. It opens with chemical hazard classes, toxicology basics and exposure limits, then moves to the practical routines of purchasing, receiving, storing, dispensing, transporting and disposing of chemicals. A laboratory module deals with design, ventilation, glassware, biological and chemical waste, and emergency equipment. The final sessions introduce process safety management, including how plants identify scenarios, protect against loss of containment, control changes and investigate near misses.
Teaching is highly practical. Participants inspect photographs and layouts of real stores and laboratories, rehearse spill and exposure responses, and work through a simplified HAZOP. They return to work with checklists, a risk assessment and a prioritised list of improvements for their own facility.
Training Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Classify chemical hazards and interpret safety data sheets and GHS labelling.
- Assess exposure risks and select controls following the hierarchy of control.
- Store, segregate, transfer and dispose of chemicals and chemical waste correctly.
- Apply safe working practices in laboratories, including fume cupboards, glassware and compressed gases.
- Respond effectively to spills, fires, leaks and personal exposure incidents.
- Use process safety tools such as HAZOP, permit to work and management of change.
- Plan inspections, training and incident investigation to sustain a chemical safety programme.
What you'll learn
Key Takeaways
Participants return to their workplaces with:
- A chemical inventory and labelling checklist for stores and laboratories.
- A storage compatibility chart adapted to the substances they use.
- A completed task risk assessment for a chemical handling activity.
- Spill and exposure response steps they can turn into posters or drills.
- An introductory HAZOP worksheet and permit to work review guide.
- A prioritised action list for improving their facility's chemical safety.
Training Methodology
The training favours demonstration and rehearsal over lecture. Delegates experience:
- Illustrated briefings on hazards, controls and process safety concepts
- Store and laboratory inspection exercises using photographs and layouts
- Practical drills for spills, exposure and fire response
- A guided mini-HAZOP in small teams
- Discussion of incidents drawn from industry investigations
Day 1: Chemical Hazards and Regulatory Foundations

- Routes of exposure, acute versus chronic effects and basic toxicology
- Safety data sheets: sections that matter most in practice
- GHS classification, pictograms and labelling
- Occupational exposure limits and monitoring
- Exercise: decoding SDS and labels for unfamiliar products
Day 2: Safe Handling, Storage and Disposal
- Purchasing, receiving and inventory control
- Segregation and incompatibility of acids, bases, oxidisers and flammables
- Storage cabinets, bunding, ventilation and ignition source control
