Heatwaves, flooding, smoke and displacement are now operational hazards, and the same workforce also carries stress, harassment, long hours and job insecurity. Many employers have policies for both but cannot show whether the measures work. Five days teach occupational health, safety and people managers to measure workplace risk performance and prove whether controls are making a difference.
You start by defining a results framework for climate-related and psychosocial risk, then select leading and lagging indicators, from heat index readings and near-miss reports to absenteeism, grievance trends and wellbeing survey scores. Sessions cover designing questionnaires and pulse surveys, using validated psychosocial instruments, combining incident data with environmental monitoring, setting baselines and targets, and presenting findings in simple dashboards. Evaluation methods include before-and-after comparison, root cause review of incidents and participatory feedback from workers and union representatives, with attention to confidentiality and ethics. The programme suits HSE managers, occupational health nurses, HR and wellbeing leads, M&E officers, sustainability teams and safety committee members in industry, agriculture, health care, education and NGOs. It is offered in classroom, online and in-house formats. Participants finish with a monitoring plan, an indicator set and a CPD-accredited certificate.
Employers are being asked to show that they protect workers from a widening set of hazards. Rising temperatures reduce safe working hours outdoors and in poorly ventilated plants, extreme rainfall disrupts sites and commutes, and psychosocial hazards such as workload, bullying, violence and uncertainty damage health and productivity. Managing these risks is only credible when it is measured, and measurement is where most workplaces fall short.
This course applies monitoring and evaluation discipline to workplace risk. Participants learn to build a theory of change and results framework for a risk programme, choose meaningful indicators and decide how data will be collected, stored and protected. They examine how to monitor climate exposures through temperature and humidity logs, weather alerts and incident records, and how to track psychosocial conditions through surveys, absence and turnover data, and confidential reporting channels.
The later sessions focus on evaluation: judging whether controls such as work-rest schedules, shade provision, flexible rostering or manager training changed outcomes, and reporting findings to boards, safety committees and regulators. Practical exercises use sample datasets and survey tools, and each delegate completes a monitoring and evaluation plan for their own workplace.
